AI in Education: Businesses, Are You Ready for Us?

A Talk by Gemma Gwilliam (Head of Digital Learning, Education and Innovation, "Portsmouth: The Digital City" Project)

About this Talk

The next generation is growing up in a world where artificial intelligence isn’t just a tool, it’s the foundation of work, creativity, and problem-solving. But while many businesses are still asking how to adapt to AI, schools are already preparing young people for an AI-driven future. This talk will explore how Portsmouth, the first city in the world to achieve the AI Quality Mark Gold Award from the Good Future Foundation has been working on a shared vision with how they are using technology and AI to improve outcomes for ALL stakeholders. We’ll showcase how schools across the city are embedding AI into enhancing teaching and learning, reducing workload, supporting accessibility and inclusion and narrowing the digital divide from EYFS to post-16. The key message is clear: our children are being prepared: are our businesses ready to welcome them? You’ll hear: How Portsmouth has pioneered a consistent AI and digital curriculum across its schools. Practical examples of how young people are already engaging with AI to learn, create, and problem-solve. What businesses need to know about the future workforce, and how to build meaningful partnerships with education. Lessons for leaders: the opportunities and responsibilities in shaping an AI-ready society. This session will challenge assumptions, spark ideas, and highlight the urgent need for stronger collaboration between education and business to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of AI innovation.
