Participatory approaches to defining AI ethics: enabling the public to decide what's right.

Pre-recorded

A Talk by Ed Houghton (Director of Research and Insights, DG Cities (Royal Borough of Greenwich))

About this Talk

Classic approaches to designing ethical principles and approaches take a top-down approach, often missing out on rich data from communities directly impacted by new technologies. This talk will explore participatory approaches, including co-design, deliberative workshops, and technology trials to help communities discuss and define the "red-lines" for AI tools that effect their lives. The talk draws on real data from Ethical Roads, a project funded by the Rees Jeffries Road Safety Fund, which worked with communities across Greenwich London to design the rules for a self-driving bus, and the use of an "Interviewer Bot" to help disadvantaged groups to safely participate in social research.
