Transformation Through Innovation

A Talk by Claire Harrison (Chief Digital & Technology Role, MHRA and Department for Business & Trade)

About this Talk

The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is undergoing a bold transformation to become an AI-enabled, digitally modern health regulator. Facing political pressure for faster clinical trials, increasing threats from counterfeit products, outdated systems, and rising cyber risks, MHRA is turning challenge into opportunity. This session explores how MHRA is: Building a technology roadmap around innovation, tech modernisation, and cyber resilience. Using AI across the entire product lifecycle – from illicit website detection to clinical trial guidance, enquiry handling, and knowledge hubs. Embracing a “Digital by Default, Secure by Design, Prove by Doing” ethos to deliver safer, faster, smarter regulatory services. Creating replicable models for other UK regulators, NHS, and international agencies. Embedding sustainable computing principles (“Code Green”) in AI innovation. Attendees will gain practical insight into risk-proportionate AI adoption in a safety-critical sector, lessons in balancing speed, ethics, and security, and a blueprint for scaling innovation across government.
